“Klein Rigi”: more seats, more comfort for guests, more space for companies

Further information on the available space

The Klein Rigi restaurant sits enthroned as a landmark on the small hill above the Thur plain. Visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area from Klein Rigi.

The go-ahead for planning by the architectural firm egger partner ag was given in fall 2019. Various concepts were examined prior to the building application and the start of construction. The planning application was submitted to the municipality of Kradolf-Schönenberg on August 28, 2020. After the building permit was granted on December 9, 2020, construction began on January 4, 2021. Various challenges such as ongoing restaurant operations, deliveries, occupancy by guests, anchoring of the retaining wall, fire protection and the underpinning of the building demanded a great deal. The excavation of the construction pit and the laying of the service lines progressed quickly and without any major problems. Construction work on the retaining wall began at the end of January. This was followed by the 2nd basement floor in concrete construction, which includes the new technical and storage rooms. The scaffolding was erected at the end of April and the two-storey timber construction was quickly completed. Two weeks later, the windows were delivered and the interior work could begin.

Independent body

The extension should be separated from the building as an independent body. By interpreting the mansard roof from the existing building, the extension is seen as independent. The design of the windows was inspired by the historical sense and interpreted in a contemporary form. The façades were constructed with special walls around the windows and elaborate tinsmith work was carried out on the roof finish. In a few years’ time, the still striking copper edge will be as dark as the existing turrets on the roof, which will harmonize the overall appearance of the building. Thanks to the modern, round entrance area with reception office, guests are welcomed in style.

Wedding room with loggia

The former wedding room became the kitchen extension. The modern kitchen appliances present the chefs with new challenges and give the guests unforgettable and successful menus. The new wedding room is located on the 1st basement floor with adjoining loggia (covered outdoor area) for weddings and aperitifs in the open air. A great deal of attention was paid to the design and acoustics. A calm and atmospheric ambience was created thanks to the elaborate floor and acoustic ceiling. The climate in the rooms is no coincidence either. The ventilation, cooling and heating systems were designed accordingly.

Rooms can be designed flexibly

Mobile partition walls allow the rooms to be adapted to the size of the company and individually furnished and designed. The new rooms can accommodate up to 170 guests and are also ideal for banquets and seminars. To enable direct and barrier-free access from the parking lot to the new event rooms, the existing inclined elevator (Metro) had to be converted and a second exit created opposite.

The finishing touches were added with the curtains, furniture, decorations and flowers. Minor finishing work as well as the surroundings/planting and the repair of the access road will be completed soon. The interior of the extension was designed for well-being and festivity,

so that guests can find a festive atmosphere and enjoy an unforgettable occasion.
We would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment. We wish the entire Klein-Rigi team and all our guests much joy and enjoyment in the new premises.

“Klein Rigi”: More comfort for guests, more space for companies

Further information on the available space

Planning began two years ago and now the excavators are moving in: The Klein Rigi restaurant is expanding its building with a new building designed specifically for catering to groups.

Since the “Klein Rigi” was chosen as the official wedding venue, the number of dates on which the entire restaurant was fully booked and reservations from a la carte guests could no longer always be accepted increased. Additional requests for seminars and day events soon led to clarifications about possible structural expansion options.

Spatial separation brings advantages

Even though the catering industry is currently having a very difficult time due to the coronavirus, the owner of “Klein Rigi”, Walter Arnold, was looking forward to the start of construction with great anticipation. Last week the time had come.

“We, and by that I mean the whole team at ‘Klein Rigi’, are very pleased that we can improve two important things with this project. Because the future spatial separation of parties and guests who want to eat à la carte will enable us to meet the needs of our guests even better and also create attractive banqueting facilities,” said Arnold happily at the ground-breaking ceremony, which was attended not only by several project planners and friends of the “Klein Rigi”, but also by Heinz Keller, the mayor of Kradolf-Schönenberg.

A new building just for companies

The new three-storey building, which was planned by the architectural firm Egger Partner AG from Schönenberg, will stand where part of the garden is currently located by the driveway. This will be completely removed in the next few days.

In addition, a rear hall in the existing restaurant will be set up as the sole kitchen for the function room and will also serve as a structural link between the existing restaurant and the new building for staff.

The areas for company and a la carte restaurant guests will be separated in future. “The new building will also have its own wheelchair-accessible entrance for companies; restaurant guests will enter our restaurant as before,” explains Arnold.

With a view over the Thur valley

If everything goes smoothly, the new building will offer new banquet and seminar rooms for up to 170 people on the restaurant level from the end of October 2021 and will include a separable hall for a total of 70 people plus a pergola with a view over the Thur valley in the first basement. You can enjoy an aperitif there, for example. Additional storage and technical rooms will be built in the basement.

“We will be able to handle it in such a way that large groups and seminars can be held without disruption, as well as meetings of 15 people or more,” explains Arnold. Something that also pleases the client is the fact that “the canton and municipality handled the planning application very swiftly and professionally, and that no objections to the project were received. That’s something that can no longer be taken for granted these days,” emphasizes Arnold.

Outdoor area to be extended

The “Klein Rigi” terrace with a view of the Säntis will also be extended and enlarged in the coming months. This will be extended towards the south by the children’s playground and equipped with additional infrastructure so that guests can be entertained outside on nice days.

In order to give the extension terrain stability, it is necessary to build a retaining wall at the bottom of the slope. The scaffolding is already in place.
